Welcome to Percy Main Primary School

Sports Premium

The government initiate which started in 2013/14 to enhance PE provision throughout schools means we receive approximately £8000 a year. The purpose of this funding is to improve staff skills so that following the initaiative all staff will be able to deliver high quality PE confidently across a range of activities.

As a school we entered into a contract with the Newcastle United Foundation who has tailored a package of support to meet our requirements. We have regular training sessions covering various sports/activities and targeted at different phases (i.e. Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2). In addition the CPD has been followed up by in-school support from specialist coaches. The coaches work alongside our teachers to further develop their skills and help them put the training into practice.

During each half term festivals are held to enable competition between schools (e.g. Football, Netball etc.) or celebration of achievement (e.g. dance, gymnastics). The festivals act as gateways to clubs so that interests/ talents can be followed outside school and to higher levels.

The funding has been used to:

  • Audit our current provision and identify areas of development.
  • Appoint a Sports Apprentice to support the delivery of PE across school
  • Provide additional training and purchase specialist coaching to develop staff expertise across a wide range of sports/activities.
  • Enable our pupils to take part in a greater range of competitive sporting activities and encourage participation in after school sports clubs.
  • Raise the profile of PE and sport throughout the school and develop pupils’ understanding of how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

As a school we have invested in making sure our children have excellent opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports at different levels and we have increased the quantity and quality of PE equipment. This has included:-

·       New Gymnastic floor mats

·       Tennis and Badminton nets and racquets

·       A variety of balls including soft, football, netball rugby etc.

·       Cricket sets

·       Bean bags, bibs, small balls, hoops and other smaller equipment

·       Netball posts

·       Archery equipment

·       Outdoor PE storage

·       Plus others

With the ability to have a much more varied and inclusive line-up of extra-curricular clubs we feel that children have a great opportunity to take part in physical education. This shows with nearly 70% of children from years 1-6 over the last two years taking part in at least one sporting club at lunch time or after school. With activities also being introduced during breakfast clubs children are amply supplied with the chance to get involved with physical activities.

Clubs have included:-

  • Football, basketball, cricket, dance, rounders, tennis, hockey, badminton, netball, archery.

With the help of the PE grant we have also been able to train and put teams into more competitions over the last two years. Over 20 competitions have been attended by the school for the each of the last two years and our results/top place finishes and progression into finals has also been steadily increasing in quantity and quality.

Our school offers the pupils a wide and exciting sports programme throughout the year.  The facilities benefit from having two well equipped and good sized halls, a large playing field and well developed playground.

Links with Partners and External Organisations:

High School Links

We have excellent external partnership links with Norham High School who very kindly allow several of their senior members of their PE staff to work on a weekly basis within our school.  Norham also provides many opportunities for our students to experience high school life by hosting inter-school sporting competitions between local primary schools.

Links with Newcastle Eagles and Falcons

For the past few years we have been delighted to welcome players and coaches from the Newcastle Eagles Basketball Team and the Newcastle Falcons Rugby Team to our school.  This has provided our pupils with many superb opportunities to extend their learning experiences and work with highly skilled and professional sportspeople. This year our basketball team were regional finalists and played in front of the Newcastle Eagles home crowd.

In the summer we start our cricket programme and, with the help of members of the Percy Main Cricket Club, offer our pupils the marvellous opportunity of learning the skills of cricket.  We also take part in the inter-schools cricket league which is usually held after school at Tynemouth Cricket Club, as well as the annual cricket festival at Percy Main Cricket Club.

Football is very popular with our students and currently we have a girls’ team and a boys’ team.  In addition to providing coaching for our pupils both during the school day and at our very popular after-school club, our teams also participate in the North Shields Inter-schools League. This is a marvellous experience for our young players which not only gives them an opportunity of visiting other local schools, but also provides invaluable experience of playing the game under competition conditions.

Swimming lessons are offered to pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6.  Each year group attends swimming on a Tuesday afternoon for one term each year.  The lessons are provided by registered swimming coaches at Tynemouth Pool.  Swimming lessons are free as school pays for these as part of the curriculum, however we do request that parents pay £2.50 each week; this contribution partially funds transport costs.

We always have lots of terrific dancers in our school and the children always enjoy taking part in the North Tyneside Dance Festival which is held every year at The Parks Sports Centre in North Shields.

We have just recently started a Chess Club for our students and this is proving to be very popular.  The children have learnt the basic skills of Chess and are now progressing on to a more intermediate level.  Hopefully, as their skills increase, we may be able to enter some students in to local competitions.

Cycling and Walking to School

We actively encourage our children cycle or walk to school as we feel that this is very beneficial, not only to help them develop healthy lifestyles, but also to minimise traffic congestion around the school premises.  Although most of our children do walk or cycle to school we have adopted the Striders Walking Scheme to help promote this further.   The scheme encourages children to walk to school once a week; if they meet this challenge they win a badge and the overall winning class wins the Striders trophy for their class.

Sports Days

Every year we hold our Annual Sports Day in which all the classes take part (except Nursery who have their own ‘mini sports day’).  There is always a wide variety of sports included in the day’s programme.  As well as the more physically demanding track events we also include some of the old favourites, e.g. sack race, egg and spoon.  This is always the highlight in our school sporting calendar and we are always delighted that so many parents arrange to come and support the pupils at this event.

And finally...

In addition to our planned schedule of sports we also offer a variety of other lessons throughout the year; recently these have included hockey, tennis and volley ball.  We fully appreciate and endorse the guidelines provided by the Department for Health and the Department for Education in relation to encourage children to participate fully in sport to help them develop healthy lifestyles.  We feel that our comprehensive programme of sports offers something that will appeal to every child instilling in them the desire to continue choosing healthy lifestyles options to enhance their future.
