Welcome to Percy Main Primary School

Welcome to Year 1 2015/16

The staff you will meet in Year One are Mrs Walls, Mrs Campbell, Miss Newby and Miss Brownrigg.

It is a big step from Reception to Key Stage 1 and we try to make it as welcoming and fun as possible.

Throughout the first term we follow a ‘transition period’ that echoes the learning styles of Reception, and they are gradually introduced to all of the routines of Key Stage 1.  We have small group phonic sessions that are based on the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme, reading books and a weekly piece of homework that is based on the work we are covering in our topic.  We will also go on lots of visits to support our topic work.

We believe this approach ensures that your child feels secure, safe and confident and will have a fantastic time in Year 1.

Our topic this year will include:
  • All About Me!

  • Toy Story

  • Take It Away!

  • Old Castle, Newcastle

  • Go Fish

  • Our Darling Grace

Our current topic is:

Our Darling Grace

This half term we will be continuing on our voyage of discovery that begins at North Shields Fish Quay and the River Tyne.

We will sail down the Tyne and out upon the cold North Sea to explore the local Lighthouses and learn about the heroic Grace Darling.

We will also learn about marine sea creatures and even have the chance to handle some, with a visit from Dove Marine Laboratory.  We may also receive a special visit from a very heroic person!

Go Fish!

As part of this topic, we will visit the Fish Quay (and enjoy fish and chips) and hope to have a special visit from  the local Coast Guard.

In art we are going to paint pebbles as fish, create epheremal art of a river landscape and explore the work of artist J.S. Lowery.

Spring Term 1:

Take It Away!

Year 1 grabbed their passports this half term, as they were whisked away on an exciting journey exploring the culture, customs and cuisine of India and China.

They made  Indian kites to celebrate their kite festival and tastied different foods from China and India...yummy!

The journey to China will ended with a visit to China Town in Newcastle, where the children experienced a Chinese buffet.

Chinese Food Tasting

Inspired by our visit to Lau's in China Town we made our own yummy chinese noodles. Mrs Tullock helped us to cook them and then we used chopsticks to eat them! This was tricky but fun!

Visit To China Town

As part of our 'Take It Away' topic, we had a brilliant time at Lau’s Restaurant in Newcastle’s China Town. We were all very adventurous and bravely tried some very different foods, including noodles, spicy chicken, prawn crackers and ‘seaweed’. The staff at Lau’s were marvellous; as we left we were presented us with a big bag of fortune cookies and lollies to enjoy back at school.

Before lunch we walked through China Town and looked at the amazing Chinese Arch which was built in 2004 by Shanghai craftsmen and stands 11m tall. We  have now produced some excellent written work based on this special day out.

Autumn Term 2:

Toy Story

During this half term Year 1 entered the magical and mysterious world of ‘Toy Story’.

They had the opportunity to discover many different things about toys from the past.  They began their magical journey by exploring their own toys and the history of old toys. We used toys to create our own ‘Toy Museum’.

We also created our own Santa’s Workshop, where we made our own toys, write letters, labels and instructions.

Autumn Term 1:

All About Me!

This term we opened Class One’s eyes to the wonder that is each and every one of them with our fantastic 'All About Me' topic. They will learnt about their bodies, their histories, their place in the world, and so much more, all through a variety of fun and creative activities.  We also looked at how to stay healthy and fit and designed and cooked a healthy meal. This was a perfect 'get-to-know-you' topic for the start of our new school year.
