Welcome to Percy Main Primary School

Welcome to Year 1

The staff you will meet in Year One are Mrs Walls, Mr Doyle, Miss Brownrigg, Mrs Whittle and Mrs Campbell.

It is a big step from Reception to Key Stage 1 and we try to make it as welcoming and fun as possible.

Throughout the first term we follow a ‘transition period’ that echoes the learning styles of Reception, and they are gradually introduced to all of the routines of Key Stage 1.  We have small group phonic sessions that are based on the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme, reading books and a weekly piece of homework that is based on the work we are covering in our topic.  We will also go on lots of visits to support our topic work.

We believe this approach ensures that your child feels secure, safe and confident and will have a fantastic time in Year 1.

Our topic this year will include:
  • All About Me!

  • To Infinity and Beyond

  • Take It Away!

  • Old Castle, Newcastle

  • Go Fish

  • Our Darling Grace

Visit to The Keep, Newcastle

We had great fun exploring Newcastle’s Castle Keep as part of our 'Old Castle, Newcastle' topic. The Keep (originally called the New Castle) is a very important regional historical treasure from which our city takes its name. The present stone castle was built during the reign of Henry II, between 1168 and 1178, at a cost of £1,144.

We were met by a guide who helped us explore this ancient building then, after lunch, we took part in a knight’s workshop which included dressing up and craft activities.

We had lots of fun and learnt lots to help us with our topic!

This term we opened our eyes to the wonder that is each and every one of us with our fantastic 'All About Me' topic. We learnt about our bodies, our histories, our place in the world, and so much more, all through a variety of fun and creative activities. We also looked at how to stay healthy and fit and designed and cooked a healthy meal. This was a perfect 'get-to-know-you' topic for the start of our new school year.
