Yassas!

During the last half term of this year, we will be looking at modern day Greece and finding out why it is popular with tourists.  The children will travel back in time to Ancient Greece and learn about their way of life; the children will look at what it was liking living in the City States of Sparta and Athens.  We will also be holding a Greek food tasting session and learning some Greek phrases.

In Literacy we will read different Greek myths and legends and met the numerous Greek gods and goddesses.  Our class read will be 'Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief'.

In Art and Design we plan to use clay to create Medusa’s head. Using Matisse’s paper cut of Icarus as inspiration, we will use collage materials to create our own Icarus falling from the sky.  We will also practise our weaving skills and spin our own web like Arachne.

Summer Term 1

Rain, Rain Go Away!

Our topic this half term was ‘Rain rain go away! During this topic we looked at flooding and focused on: What is flooding? Where and why does it occur? Can we prevent flooding?

We did a case study looking at the major flooding in Cumbria in 2015.

In Literacy we used the text ‘Flood’ by Alvaro F. Villa. We used it to write our own dramatic story for this picture book.

In Art and Design Technology we looked at the works of great artist Claude Monet. We studied his painting style and recreated his famous ‘Flood Waters’ piece.

In Science we studied inventors including Marie Curie, William Smith, Lehmann and Arthur James Wilson and looked at how their inventions changed lives forever!

Spring Term 2:

What a Load of Rubbish!

For the second half of the Spring Term, Class Three considered the importance of recycling. They found out about which materials can be recycled and the different processes that are used.

In Literacy the children used the books ‘Michael Recycle’ and ‘Litterbug Doug’, both of which are stories by Ellie Bethal, written in the form of a poem. The children used what they learnt about recycling to write their own poems in the same style.

As well as looking into the processes of recycling, the children used their art and design skills to create their own artwork using recycling, such as sock monsters, bottle fish and pencil holders.

In ICT, the children used animation programmes such as Scratch and Kodu to design and write their very own recycling computer game!

Veni vidi vici

This half term our topic was History led and focused on why the Roman army came to invade and settle in the UK.  Class 3 travelled back in time to meet a real life Roman Centurion.

We visited Segedunum in Wallsend; this helped us to understand the local history and how society has been shaped by the
settlement of different people.

We also learnt a bit of Latin. Salve, quid agis?

Autumn Term 1:

Cliffhanger

This half term we read the book 'Cliffhanger' by Jacqueline Wilson.

Cliffhanger is a story about a young boy named Tim, whose father sends him on an adventure holiday, even though he hates games! Tim dreads each day and this novel deals with feeling worried, learning how to cope in difficult situations and self discovery.

In the story the children are split into four teams, which they work closely with to tackle several new and daunting challenges. We did the same in class!
