Man the Walls!

Our topic this half term is:

Man the Walls!

During this half term we will be looking at the Medieval period in Britain with the main focus being on medieval castles and the feudal system (the medieval class system).

The medieval period in Britain spanned from 1066 with the Battle of Hastings, to the devastating Black Death of 1348, the Hundred Years' War with France and the War of the Roses, which finally ended in 1485.

We will find out about life in the Medieval period as well as focusing on medieval castles. We will look at why they were built, who lived in them as well as their defenses and famous battles.

Summer Term 1:

Time to Leave the Village...Time to Raid and Pillage!

This half term we looked at the Viking period of European history with the main focus being on their settlement of Britain. This time saw Europeans live in fear of Viking riders from distant Scandinavia. The Vikings themselves had a major influence on trade, warfare, fashion and language to name but a few.

We found out about Viking daily life as well their raiding, looking at where they came from and where they settled. Runic writing, common jobs, food and fashion will also be looked at.

In our computing we used new software to recreate a 3D Viking village, whilst focusing on the Norse gods in our artwork. Finally using clay and our design skills we recreated a model longship.

Spring Term 1:

Heads Will Roll!

This half term Year 5 looked at English history from 1485 – 1603; the Tudor period. This time saw some of the most famous monarchs ascend the throne including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. It also saw many changes in religion and warfare and new discoveries that led to changes in attitude about the world the Tudor people lived in.

We found out about the Tudor Kings and Queens in particular Henry VIII and Elizabeth and the main events during their reigns. We also took a look at the significance of things like the Tudor Rose, the Spanish Armada and Exploration.

We also studied Tudor life for both the rich and poor; looking at housing, fashion, entertainment and medicine. We even created our own Tudor person and tried to become a royal portrait painter for a few lessons.

Autumn Term 2:

Space - Above and Beyond

This half term we looked above the clouds into orbit to see what mysterious forces are out there. We looked primarily at the Earth, Sun and Moon and how we are able to see certain things from the surface of our planet, how we have night and day and how big our planet is. We also studied the moon in great detail before moving farther out into the solar system via our "rocket mission through Samba" to look at some of the planets in our solar system.

On our journey we investigated things like astronauts, gravity, aliens and what the future holds in space.

Underlying all this were texts by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. We read these to get a flavour of what it would be like to become an astronaut.

Autumn 1:

Scorched!

This half term wel looked at the geographical locations of the main desert areas, including finding out about the biggest desert in the world, (which should be a surprise!)

We looked at how deserts are formed and how it is possible for people, plants and animals to survive there. We found out about water too and why deserts have very little. This included some science work on the water cycle and water in it's three states.

As part of our Scorched topic.,Year 5 we read the book ‘Holes’, written by Louis Sachar. We used this text to produce a variety of texts, such as a journal entry and an information leaflet.
